Manufacturing offers problem-solving and working with my hands
Josh Garland, Project Manager, BC Stone
When Josh Garland graduated from college with a degree in biology, he knew that he wanted a career that utilized his education and allowed him to problem solve and work with his hands. He has found that — and so much more — in a job in manufacturing. Today, Josh is a project manager with BC Stone, and he’s found a great place to live and work in Bedford.
What’s your background and how did you get into manufacturing?
After graduating high school in 2008, I went to college and obtained a degree in biology in 2012. While I was searching for a career that would utilize my education in biology, I chose to work as an installer at BC Stone. I became very interested in the stone industry and was eager to learn more. I have always been mechanically inclined and felt that the stone industry challenged my innate sense of creating solutions. With my installation knowledge and additional training/knowledge obtained at another workplace, I was offered a position as a project manager.
What makes your career interesting and worthwhile?
As a project manager, I manage numerous jobs at a time which entails reviewing all details, discussions with customers and contractors, and other coworkers throughout the company. There are challenges associated with construction projects, and solving those challenges is something I enjoy. I get to problem-solve, identify solutions, and effectively resolve matters. Every job is unique, so every day is different, which makes being a project manager very rewarding.
What makes Bedford County a great place to live and work?
There are many reasons why Bedford County is a great place to live and work. For me, a few of those reasons would be the quiet rural lifestyle and small-town atmosphere.
Why should today’s grads consider a job in manufacturing?
Manufacturing is the process of turning raw materials into finished products, and it is a huge part of the economy. It involves processing and refining raw materials into something more useful. Plus, it offers great job stability!
